Chelyabinsk Pipe Mills, one of Russia's largest Pipe mills with 9000 employees, manufactures 700,000 tons of longitudinally welded pipes annually. This represents 12 % of the total line pipe production in Russia.
The pipes, which range from 530 to 1220 mm in diameter and have a wall thickness of 7 - 22 mm, are manufactured in grade K52-K60, which is comparable to X-60 and X-70 steels respectively.
Chelyabinsk recently upgraded their four continuous longitudinal tack welding stations with new ESAB LAF 1600 power sources, A6 welding heads and control systems with laser joint tracking to handle tack welding speeds of up to 8 m/min.
The tack welding stations use ESAB´s new air-cooled MAG torches with spring loaded contact jaws to enhance consistent current transfer. The torches have a side shielded gas nozzle with a quick disconnection feature for ease of operation.
By having the gas nozzle ahead of the contact jaws the electrode stick out is always visible and makes cleaning and jaw changes easy. It also keeps the amount of spatter picked up by the gas nozzle to an absolute minimum.
